Frequently asked questions

Is it legal to use a pay stub generator?

Yes — as long as the payroll and income information you enter is true and accurate. The document itself isn't the problem; using false or altered information to obtain credit, housing, employment, or other financial gain is. That's why TrueStub requires you to certify the accuracy of your information before downloading anything, and why our Terms prohibit fraudulent use outright.

How are the tax amounts calculated?

We annualize your per-period pay and apply 2026 federal income tax brackets, FICA (Social Security and Medicare, including the 0.9% additional Medicare tax above $200,000 single / $250,000 joint), and your state's 2026 income tax table — all 50 states plus DC, including mid-year law changes. Pre-tax deductions like 401(k) contributions reduce taxable income first. The result is a genuine estimate, not a flat-percentage guess. See our generator to try it live.

How are bonuses, tips, and overtime handled?

Bonuses are withheld for federal tax at the flat 22% supplemental-wage rate — the same method employers use. Tips are taxed like regular wages. Overtime is paid at 1.5× your hourly rate. Note: the 2026 overtime tax deduction (from the One Big Beautiful Bill Act) is claimed on your tax return, not in paycheck withholding, so it doesn't change the numbers on the stub.

How does Head of Household work?

Federal tax uses the full 2026 Head of Household brackets and the $24,150 HoH standard deduction. State tax for Head of Household is computed using single-filer state tables; federal uses full HoH tables.

What are the extra state deduction lines (CA SDI, NY PFL, etc.)?

Twelve states require employee-paid disability or paid-leave contributions, and we add them automatically based on your work state — for example CA SDI (1.3%), NJ disability + family leave (two lines), NY paid family leave + disability, and MA paid family/medical leave (two lines). Annual wage bases and yearly caps are applied on a year-to-date basis. In Delaware, Minnesota, and Maine, employers may pay part of the contribution, so we use the maximum employee share and note it on the stub.

Can I adjust for dependents or extra withholding (W-4)?

Yes. Enter dependent children under 17 ($2,000/year each) and other dependents ($500/year each) and we reduce your federal withholding accordingly (never below $0). You can also add a fixed extra federal withholding amount per pay period — the same "extra withholding" line from Form W-4.

Will my landlord or bank accept the pay stub?

It depends on how they verify income — and we don't guarantee acceptance by any third party. Many landlords and lenders verify employment or income independently (for example, by requesting bank statements or contacting employers), and their decision is entirely their own. What we can promise is that the numbers on a TrueStub pay stub are computed correctly from the information you provide.

What's the difference between the preview and the downloaded PDF?

The free on-screen preview carries a "PREVIEW" watermark across the document. The paid PDF download is clean, print-ready, and watermark-free — suitable for your records.

Do you store my information?

The live preview is computed entirely in your browser — nothing is sent or stored. If you generate a free watermarked PDF, your stub data is sent to our server only to render the file and is never stored. Paid orders keep your email and a snapshot of the stub data so you can re-download. See our Privacy Policy for details.

Can I create pay stubs for past pay periods?

Yes. Set the pay period start/end dates and pay date to whatever period you need. Year-to-date (YTD) figures count the pay periods elapsed from January 1 through your pay date — so a March stub shows March YTD, not a full year. If this isn't your first stub of the year, you can also enter your actual YTD gross and the deduction YTDs scale proportionally.

Do you offer bundles or W-2 forms?

Bundles are available on our pricing page — 6, 12, or 26 stubs at a discount, handy for catching up on several months. W-2 and 1099 forms are on our roadmap.

Is this tax advice?

No. TrueStub provides estimates based on published 2026 tax tables and the information you enter. It is not tax or legal advice. For your specific situation, consult a qualified tax professional.
